Insurgency: Jonathan Must Address Nigerians Now – NLC— Dec 4, 2014|Leave a commentThe Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has told President Goodluck Jonathan to borrow a leaf from his Kenya counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, and address Nigerians on the state of the nation and take concrete step towards ending insurgency in the country. The noted that with over 5,000 already killed in the insurgency, it was time Nigeria changed its strategy in battlingthe bloodthirsty sect.NLC vice president and general secretary of National Union of Textile Garment Workers of Nigeria (NUTGWN), Comrade Isa Aremu, made this call while addressing the press in Kaduna yesterday in reaction to the recent Kano bombing. He noted that Nigeria parades possibly the highest number of past heads of state who, he said, must join forces with the federal government and other patriotic citizens of the country to terminate the insurgency and other senseless killings in the country.“Citizens must be assured in concrete and practical terms that workplaces, schools, markets and worship places are safe. The current state of insecurity, if not curtailed, will further worsen existing low productivity, ground work places and under develop the nation.“When we add serial bombings in parts of Maiduguri and now Yobe, these attacks getting too many for a country that has not been officially said to be at war. More frightening is the fact that the casualties include Nigeria soldiers and policemen meant to protect us.“It’s time President Goodluck Jonathan addressed the citizens on the state of the nation. Just today (yesterday) Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta not only addressed Kenyans but fired his internal security minister and accepted the resignation of his police chief following the al-Shabaab quarry attack that reportedly killed 36 quarry workers in the north of the country.”Aremu challenged the country’s commander-in-chief, service chiefs, defence minister, interior minister, national security adviser, state governors, electedand appointed public officers and traditional rulers to live up to the expectation of their respective oaths of office and ensure inclusive security of all Nigerians.“If we can commendably secure political rallies and cultural carnivals, we must be able to guarantee security for all. With these senseless killings, 2.5 million people displaced; never before is Nigeria calling and we must obey. “Nigeria parades possibly the highest number of past heads of state that include General Yakubu Gowon, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, General Muhammad Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida, Ernest Shoneken, General Abdulsalam Abubakar and Olusegun Obasanjo. It is high time these past heads of state joined forces with the federal government and patriotic citizens of the country to terminate theinsurgency and senseless killings in the country.”He further joined other Nigerians and the international community to sympathise with the Emir, people and government of Kano State on the Friday November 28, 2014 bomb attack at Kano Central Mosque which killed over 120 persons and wounded several others. On the recent devaluation on the Naira, the NLC chief said it would further worsen the deteriorating condition of workers through eroded wages and high prices of basic goods.“Indeed government must reverse these ill-advised anti-people policies of devaluation of Naira and increase ininterest rate,” he said.
