Insurgency: We ’ll Restore Sanity Soon —Jonathan President Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday, assured Nigerians that in spite of escalating acts of terrorism, he was determined to restore sanity in the country very soon. The president spoke at the commissioning of the Nigeria Police International Peacekeeping Centre and Police Museum at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. According to him, the police have a cardinal role to play in containing internal security, stressing his administration’ s commitment to restore sanity to every part of the country . “I have every confidence that the Nigeria Police will be alive to the responsibility of protecting the internal peace of the country and I pledge the commitment of my administration to support the police,” Jonathan stressed. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, in his speech, recalled that the Nigeria Police participation in peacekeeping started in 1960, with the first IGP, Louis Edet, deployed in the Congo. He said due to the successes recorded in promoting the core values of peacekeeping, Nigeria was the first country to deploy the First Formed Police Unit in Liberia, in 1994, which made the African Union (AU) to request for another Formed Unit in Somalia. He commended President Jonathan for promoting the welfare of the police, especially with the many housing programmes scattered in parts of the country, as well as the construction of hospitals and schools, procurement and refurbishment of police equipment, among others. Abubakar maintained that with the positive development, Force discipline had been restored “to the extent that the Nigeria Police plays cardinal role in international peacekeeping operations.” He said the international peacekeeping centre would serve as training centre for police formations in Africa. The edifice was named after President Jonathan while well-equipped facilities in the museum were named after international and national peacekeepers as well as officers who had distinguished themselves. Solemn moment of the ceremony was the naming of one of the facilities after the late Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG- Operations ) Haruna John, who died in an air crash in Jos, Plateau State, while on official assignment. --CULLED FROM NIGERIAN TRIBUNE
