Interactive Data Visualization Designer -- World Bank BACKGROUND: The World Bank recognizes that transparency and accountability are essential to the development process and central to achieving the Bank’s mission to alleviate poverty. The Bank’s commitment to openness is also driven by a desire to foster public ownership, partnership and participation in development from a wide range of stakeholders. As a knowledge institution, the World Bank’s first step is to share its knowledge freely and openly. Statistics and data are a key part of that knowledge and are easily accessible on the web for all users. The World Bank provides free and open access to a comprehensive set of data about development in countries around the globe, together with other datasets cited in the data catalog. Broader access to these data allow policymakers and advocacy groups to make better-informed decisions and measure improvements more accurately. They are also valuable tools to support research by journalists, academia and others, broadening understanding of global issues. Data visualization has become an important aspect of how the World Bank communicates the stories behind its open data on development and the fight against poverty. JOB DESCRIPTION: The Data Visualization Graphic Designer will design and produce static and interactive data visualizations using World Bank Open Data to be used in social media and on websites. Duties include: · Working with online communications and open data teams to help establish storylines that can be translated into data visualizations. · Designing and producing original and interactive charts, graphs, and other data visualizations using World Bank data. The visualizations will be used online and, where appropriate, in print communications materials. SCOPE OF WORK This position is for a total of 45 days, beginning July 8th, 2013. REQUIREMENTS · Bachelor’s or Masters degree in digital design, graphic arts, data journalism, computer graphics or a related field. · 1-3 years experience in designing and producing digital data visualization on complex topics. · Demonstrated ability to represent complex concepts through clean and clear digital visualizations. · Experience with design tools such as Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop, web technologies including HTML5, JavaScript and CSS, data visualization tools such as Tableau, Google Public Data Explorer, Infogr.am and Datawrapper and data visualization libraries such as D3, Raphael, Flot and Highcharts. · Familiarity with international affairs, international development and/or international statistics preferred. · Excellent written and spoken command of English. Can write clean and precise copy. · Good demonstrated levels of initiative, judgment, and decisiveness in accomplishing tasks. · Excellent time-management skills and eye for detail · Strong diplomatic, interpersonal, and teamwork skills; sensitivity to working in a multicultural environment HOW TO APPLY Please send a CV, cover letter, and link to portfolio/github (and/or 3 design samples) to [email protected].
