The nation’s largest 1750 enterprises control half the nation’s revenue of $4.3 trillion in 2013. But the vast majority of businesses are small: 61 per cent have no employees; another 14 per cent employ five or less. Sixty-two per cent of all businesses have an annual revenue of less than $200,000; which means their owners, after deducting outgoings, have bought a job or a hope more than a profitable income.
