Interesting Stats for business in In Australia, more than 500 new businesses start up each week to join the existing 2.15 million businesses spread across the nation’s 509 industry categories. Lest we think it is all plain-sailing from then, it is sobering to note that the nation loses 40 per cent of all those enterprises every four years. Around 38 per cent survive 10 years, around 9 per cent survive 25 years and only one in a hundred celebrate a golden anniversary of 50 years: a lower survival rate than marriages. Many, of course, are taken over or merged along the way. Of passing interest is that Westpac is the nation’s oldest business, is celebrating its 200th birthday in several years’ time. The nation’s largest 1750 enterprises control half the nation’s revenue of $4.3 trillion in 2013. But the vast majority of businesses are small: 61 per cent have no employees; another 14 per cent employ five or less. Sixty-two per cent of all businesses have an annual revenue of less than $200,000; which means their owners, after deducting outgoings, have bought a job or a hope more than a profitable income.
