Interesting application of tech: Miniature Masterpieces: New Photographic Techniques for Imaging Ancient Mesopotamian Cylinder Seals -Lecture by Wayne Pitard, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Thursday, November 14, 2013 Kelsey Museum Lecture Hall While the carving of cylinder seals was one of the major art forms of ancient Mesopotamia, a modern appreciation of these designs has been hampered by the tiny size of the seals and the difficulty of examining a work of art shaped in the form of a cylinder. Recently developed imaging systems now allow us to take high-resolution, flat images of the cylindrical surfaces of seals, giving considerable insight into the interrelationship between the characteristics of the stone and the way the artisan formed the design. In addition, Reflectance Transformation Imaging has opened up new possibilities for the study of seal impressions.
