Interesting article. Im not sure where I fit on this scale but think that Im fairly un-American in my approach. My take on my teaching would be that I both lecture a lot and stimulate discussion by tossing out provocative ideas. Concerning praise, I give high praise to students at 93+, am content with A- students, and encourage students at the C level. However, I tend to terrorize underachievers and am especially not-nice when my favorites under-achieve. Generally speaking, I agree with the article in thinking that I do more harm when I over-praise and have cut back on that over the years. But I also feel that there are glimpses of ability in weak students and seek to encourage weaker students to be more confident.
