Interesting debate on private school education on BBC Radio 2. Why abolish private schools? If parents want to pay for them then thats an individual familys choice, just like the NHS v private medicine. If it hadnt been for the Army, who knows how many schools I would have ended up in (5th by age 8), private schools are necessary for foreign students who want a long-term education, but they also need to interact with English-speaking students too! Its not solely about classroom education, its also about the facilities that are paid for by parents that private schools have access to - the most important aspect of my school days was the access to the music rooms, art and DT centre, and sports which kept me going outside of the school day. Private schools also run on longer days which many teachers perhaps wouldnt want, filling the childs day with education and extracurricular activities as opposed to a 3pm kick out or confinement to an after school club until parents can collect. Once youre out in the open world your own effort and ambition paves the way, in any case. Private schools always nurture ambition and higher education, perhap that also explains where privately-educated students end up? Discuss...
