Interesting history from 1878. George Reynolds agreed on behalf of the Mormon Brigham Young and the Mormon Church to be a legal test case supporting polygamy as an expression of religious freedom. Reynolds was a general authority in the Mormon hierarchy and had three wives: Mary Tuddenham, Mary Goold, and Amelia Schofield. SCOTUS rejected Reynolds claims. He ultimately suffered a mental breakdown in 1907, and died in 1909. (Photo credit USHS)
