Interesting news. Im no fan of Wal-mart - in fact, due to various issues I have with the company, I have only spent about $40 total at Wal-mart in the past 2 years. However, they are pushing their new Made in USA initiative and this new Kent bicycle factory in South Carolina is one result. The article states the factory will begin by assembling imported parts- but, over the next two years will actually manufacture components. As Ive pointed out before, the jobs are great, but long term the good news is these new factories tend to be state of the art with the latest in manufacturing technology, which puts them at a competitive advantage in efficiency versus somewhere like China who is using outdated and worn machinery, which tends to result in lower quality and waste. The USA will never have a labor cost advantage so its encouraging to see were finally working smarter.
