Interesting topic raised by Brad Larsen, long-standing friend and work colleague. We would appreciate any feedback from guides working regularly with lion - and any images you may have of known-age individuals. Here is a question that I believe field guides may be a whole lot better at answering than myself and I am curious on the opinions, We have at our disposal a lion ageing guide which we use to access age. Returns last year in Tanzania indicated a big difference in visual interpretations of age and x ray dental scans using the pulp cavity to determine age. As many guides know a particular individual lion or pride I would be interested in their opinion on the nose pigmentation, We use a 60% black nose as an indication of a 6 year old 50% black as 5 yrs old. This is a challenge if the lion has been in a burnt area. Markings such as the marking at the back of the legs and spots are also used. At what age do spots disappear completely? Picture of known ages of known lions would also be appreciated
