Interesting tidbits about Ethiopia on this date on May 8 -------------------------------------------------------- --- Today hosts World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. This day is dedicated to celebrating the achievements and efforts of World Red Cross Organization and Red Crescent Society. --- On this date in 1932, the New York Times reported the royal wedding of the two most influential families in Ethiopia; the Emperors son, Crown Prince Asfaw Wosen, and Princess Wollete Israel Seyoum---the daughter of Leul Ras Seyoum Mengesha, Prince of Tigray; and great granddaughter of granddaughter of the late Emperor Yohannes IV. The marriage fell apart during Italian occupation when Princess Wolletes father, all but defeated fighting the Italians, surrendered and submitted to the Italian occupation. It is beleived the marriage dissolved as a result of this surrender, although the families reconciled after the liberation of Ethiopia in 1941. Princess Wollete Israel Seyoum, whom had already a child-son and was widowed from a previous marriage, would never again marry, settling in Nazret for the remainder of her life where she pursued the study of art. Leul Ras Seyoum Mengesha was killed during the 1960 December coup.
