Interior Book Drop How-To: Youve probably seen or even used the automated interior Book Drop / Return. When used properly, it will actually check your Library materials back in for you! Heres how it works and why its so important to be patient while using it! Weve even included photos below: Photo #1. Theres a sign with a light that changes from green to yellow and occasionally red. Pay attention to the light! Just like a traffic light, green means go and thats when you can proceed by sliding 1 book through the slot. *Do NOT hold the door open, as this can affect the machines operations. Photo # 2). Once the book is put in the slot, the light will turn yellow. This means slow down and wait (until the light turns green again) before sliding your next book (or movie or audiobook through). Once the light turns green again, proceed with your next item. If the light ever turns red, alert a staff member so we can check the machine. Photo # 3. This is the behind the scenes view of an item sliding down the drop where it lands on the belt. Note the laptop computer that is mounted to the belt ((a great reason why you shouldnt let kids throw the books through the slot!). This computer is connected to the reader that checks-in the materials that come through. If, for some reason, there was an issue checking the item in, the computer logs it. If there is a hold on the item, the computer sends the hold to the receipt printer (that is also mounted to the belt). Photo # 4. There are 2 bins on either side of the Book Drop / Return belt. The bin on the left is labeled Exceptions and the bin on the right is Ready To Shelve. When the item is read by the computer, items that have checked in fine get carried by the belt to the bin on the right. If the item does not get checked in, the belt carries it to the Exceptions bin on the left, where a staff member will pull it out and check it in by hand. There are several reasons an item falls into the Exceptions bin, such as a hold being on the item, a damaged tag, or someone accidentally returned an item that doesnt belong to us.
