Intermediate Championship! Carrickmacross Emmets 1.13 Donaghmoyne Fontanoys 2.13. The Emmets and Donaghmoyne lined out at Inniskeen on Sunday before a good attendance on a blustery but dry afternoon. Given the local proximity and historic rivalry of the clubs it was envisaged to be an interesting contest and that it was; but it never reached the intensity status of championship football! From the throw–the Emmets were first to break ground and after a minute of play Sean Downey put great height and accuracy on the ball to open the scoring but within a minute the Fontanoys had equalised from play. In the subsequent ten-minutes it was all Donaghmoyne as they set about taking control of affairs; two points from play were followed by a point from a free-kick; which in turn was followed by a goal and for good measure another point from play was added to their total. Emmets trailed by seven-points at this stage but James Conlon with a point and a sound left-footer from John McMenamin cut the deficit; however the opposition answered with two-points of their own as we entered the last twelve-minutes of the first half. Kevin O’Hanlon collected and delivered a nice point to narrow the margin; another point from the trusty left foot of John McMenamin kept the momentum going; Stephen Gollogly opened his account with a point from play to leave three-points between the sides. The impetus now being shown by the Emmets was rewarded with a penalty kick as James Conlon was toppled in the square; Stephen Gollogly coolly found the corner of the Donaghmoyne net! Once again John McMenamin exhibited his capability with his third point from play to level the scores approaching the break! Nevertheless; the remaining two points of the half went to the Fontanoys and on reflection were the result of two handling errors on behalf of the Emmets defence. A poor and sluggish start to the second half allowed Donaghmoyne to nab three points without reply before Stephen Gollogly rescued a point for the Emmets. Suddenly from out of the blue and unchallenged for possession a Donaghmoyne forward found a clear opening in the Carrick defence and he scored an excellent goal to put his team seven-points up for the second time in the match. Cillian Cromwell broke through for a splendid point and Stephen Gollogly added another one to improve the situation. Sean Downey was composed as he slotted over his second point of the game while Stephen Gollogly tapped over a free-kick to leave a one-goal difference on the scoreboard! Donaghmoyne stopped the Emmets revival with a point from play as the final countdown began! The Emmets had introduced some fresh legs and were still in a positive mood as they fought hard for possession; however four speculative efforts which all ended wide of the target were costly at the final outcome! One more point by Stephen Gollogly concluded the scoring for the Emmets with a minute to go but they could not conjure a badly needed goal before the last whistle sounded! Performance wise the Emmets team finished strongly with some good passages of play but their handling and shooting was mediocre and did not do justice to their overall display!
