International Nigerian artist Nnenna Okorie is widely famous for her relief sculptures composed with studio made artificial papers, rope-like raffia strands, burlap, industrial material such as nylon and the found substance of clay, to create works of heavily tactile and fragile nature. In her works, she variously explores materials in their transformative state; first as biodegradable substance and then as a material signifier which gives way to artistic possibilities. For a display, these sculptural pieces are usually mounted or hung, obeying the laws of gravity as they are either refracted in a state of ascent or suspended, frozen in mid-air. Okorie’s works reminds us of the material or industrial world we live in. She appropriates and engages these materials by processing and re-ordering them to recall their transitory and ephemeral nature, as a part of natural process. Traditional African textile design and fabric are part of the subjects she represents in her largely abstract compositions. Tonight, July 8, she will be discussing her work with a set of panelists on ‘’Face-To-Facebook,’’ on the Facebook Group, University of African Art. Time: 1pm Centre US Time, 2pm Eastern Time, 7pm Nigerian Time, 6pm Ghanaian Time, 8pm South Africa.
