Internet close to three billion users —ITU The Internet will have close to three billion users by the end of 2014, two thirds of which will be from the developing world, new research has found. The United Nations International Telecommunications Union said the figures will equate to around 40 per cent of the world’s population. Around 90 per cent of those who are not yet using the internet hail from developing countries, the report found. By the end of the year around one-fifth of the African population will have access to the internet; compared to nearly two-thirds of the population of the Americas. Europe has the highest internet penetration rate of 75 per cent, while the Asia-Pacific region has the largest population of internet users. Mobile-broadband connections are expected to reach around 2.3 billion global subscriptions. Africa has been the key area for mobile-broadband growth, leaping from 2 per cent penetration in 2010 to almost 20 per cent in 2014. Fixed-broadband penetration growth, however, is expected to slow at around 10 per cent by the end of the year. Similar to Internet subscriptions, Asia-Pacific region also dominates the most users in fixed-broadband, while Africa has the least, with lower than 0.5 per cent of its population. Around 7 billion people worldwide are expected to own mobile phones, with developing countries housing 75 per cent of them. —telegraph.co.uk
