Internet freedom is vitally important to our lives, economy and ability to share information. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration – the federal agency that advises the president on telecommunications policies – recently announced that it intends to relinquish the functions of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which oversees the allocation of IP addresses, to the global multistakeholder community. The Internet must not fall under the control of bad actors in the international community or a heavy-handed global agency. I joined with a group of my colleagues to write to the administration and ask that the current model for the Internet be preserved to ensure that online freedom is protected.
