Interstellar - redefines the word outstanding! Often times there are artists who think so different, so out of the box, that their work runs the risk of being called too cerebral, too intellectual and not entertaining enough, in the normal sense of the word. A.R.Rahman got there with a couple of tracks from Rockstar. I understood those and was amazed (& yes entertained) by them only after I had heard them a few times. Same with Terence Malik & Tree of Life. And its the same with Chris Nolan & Interstellar. That Chris Nolan is a fantastic storyteller and filmmaker is stating the obvious. Here, he straddles science & human psychology to give us a special piece of fiction. Very special! I would like to believe that I understood the movie entirely, but I doubt thats true. Theres one chunk either side of the interval that I didnt quite get but I think I will get it when I see it a second time (oh yes, I will!) However, I believe I got nearly all of the rest of the movie including the crux of the movie. And man is it outstanding!!! Coming to the cinematic aspects of the film - they are fabulous. Its visually stunning with the CG & VFX work going beyond excellent. Its not a short film, but it is definitely not a drag either. Contrary to tech-heavy hindi films that overexplain every little intricacy and treat the audience as dummies, this film does not explain much but leaves it to the intelligence and observation skills of the audience to decipher a lot, through the dialogues and screenplay. The way the movie explains the concept of time, space & gravity and treats these like characters is fabulous... Performances are outstanding. Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway & Jessica Chastain are continually trying to outdo each other and the audience is the beneficiary. The supporting cast does really well too, especially Matt Damon in a nice cameo. Another star of the film is Hans Zimmer & his background score. Its not only operatic, melodious, soulful, poignant and other nice things, but it also blends in with the screenplay & the visuals perfectly. All-in-all, Interstellar is a must-see. Theres so much in the film that would make me want to see it again! Maybe next time I will get the one little bit that I didnt get this time. PS - the fact that the film is not stereoscopic 3D makes no difference to the brilliance of the visuals...
