Interview 02 of 05- Illyaraja Illyaraja was carrying tiles from Chennai to Mumbai. Its takes 8 days for him to cover this trip. He has been driving for 11 long years and doesnt using any form or Engine Brakes (implies no Exhaust Brakes as well). He uses gear 01 to control speed of vehicle coming downhill. He does mention that the truck models came with exhaust brakes but were removed by an aftermarket mechanic citing that the exhaust brakes dont work well. Go through the interview to make your own opinion. My mind is flooded with questions like- What about safety? Drivers seem totally immune to the knowledge of safety and control that a good engine brake can bring to them. Should the OE take responsibility of providing the truckers with an option of engine brake and let them decide whether or not, they need it? What about regulations? Indian has a regulation in place for supplemental retardation. ECE R13/06 but the industry seems to be ignorant towards its implementation or even the mere knowledge of it.
