Interview mit Rogue von den Crüxshadows zu „Sophia“, „Mystery of the Whisper“ und „Dreamcypher“ am 9.11.2006 in München BA: Hello Rogue! Your style of music is very popular in the gothic – scene, what would you say is the concept of success behind your band? What makes the difference to other bands in that scene? Rogue: Well, I think it’s our focus. The meaning of our music is very straight and came deep out of our hearts. It does not sound so negative like other bands in the scene do. We have ideas and concepts behind Crüxshadows that are strong, power- and meaningful. The other point is the interaction with the audience, that is very unique to the scene. And we write a kind of music, that is not necessarily affected by the scene around us! BA: The Band is travelling a lot for theyr shows. What would you say what kind of places inspired you most, and did this kind of inspiration influence your music? Rogue: Mhmm hard to say that! Every place is different for me, and gives different inspirations. I mean you live in Munich, and surely there is nothing special on it for you. For us for example this city is special. On the other hand we live in Florida and say well it’s just our home. But for many other people Florida is special. I think you just has to open your eyes and take a step outside of yourself when you reflect the world. Mostly the different places give not necessarily inspiration that goes into the music, but it energizes me for the show. BA: You try to integrate your audience and dancers very much into the show, what kind of emotions and reactions did you get back from playing and dancing between them? Rogue: When I go down and perform in the audience, singing to someone and looking in the eyes of someone, then i often think about the person. What is it for a person, what kind of thoughts do they have? I really try to integrate the audience and catch out someone very deeply for myself. For me this makes the songs come alive. When the audience is touched by what I’m singing then it gives more energy for me. The audience and the dancers get a kind of energy toghether that seems a feeling of beeing high. The dancers on the other hand help me to generate energy on stage. It’s very important to have lot going on on stage. I want that people forget what is around them and just sink into the music, become one with her. BA: You are an american band, so did it happen, that you had to explain the politics of your country as a musician? Rogue: Well, yes sometimes it happens, that we have to explain. I think the hate people have against America is very much a controlled thinking from the news given from media. It’s not very fair against the people living in America. After the 2nd WW only America and Russia stands as the super power nations in the world, and now there is a desire to seperate from the US. Europe gets back some national pride and is really becoming a nation. In the US I think this politics will bring some changes that will curse the nation. I mean what europe should not forget, America is a very young nation and once the Americans came there from Europe. So don’t hate in general, ask what they tell you! BA: You rereleased “Mystery of the Whisper”, an album witch was written in a very dramatic time, right? Rogue: Oh yes that’s true, it was a very hard time for Crüxshadows. Two members of the band had left her. So I really stood at the point where I had to survive to rescue my dream. But I wasn’t falling down, because people stood behind me and held me. I think the style of Mystery is not really depressed, it is a kind of victory in the music, that is very positive. But of course there are not so much dancing songs on it, but the songs are all very soulful! BA: What comes in your mind by thinking on “Sophia” your new single? Rogue: First the cover! I did the cover by myself. Sometimes when I have the time, I do a lot of artwork things. The song Sophia itself is about finding that purpose – realizing how you can be. Sophia is a reference to the greek word for wisdom, which is often represented as Athene. I work very visual and often see full music videos in my head when I think about a song or have to explain it. BA: In January you will release “Dreamcypher” , how fast is the work on that album? Rogue: Actually it’s been mastered and the artwork is finished. The company to press the CD is just waiting for a signal from me. First we wanted to bring it out in November, but producer and managment said it’s better to bring it out in january. So we are now on a promotion tour in a way, the same as we did with Ethernaut. It really helps to promote the album before it is released. I mean it’s a bit typical for Crüxshadows, not doing it normal, when all said to us – don’t tour in summer – we did, and now all are touring in summer, and we tour in winter. BA: The members of CXS have changed again. Pyromantic is new behind the keyboards, is it also a part of the visual concept to change members? Rogue: No no there is no concept behind. The concept of CXS is not represented in the members of our band. The members of CXS changed a lot in the years, thats how it goes. Jen (Pyromantic) was a big fan of the band, and after Trevor moved away with his girlfriend to Texas, Jen tested it out how she played keyboard for us. And now she is in the band! In terms of recording I mostly play the keyboards, but on stage it would not function singing and dancing behind keyboards, oh no ! BA: The last question is personal, I know that you and Jessie planned to get married. Are you married yet? Rogue: Yes it’s true we are planning to get married. Well actually not, because Crüxshadows is so time consuming and so much in our life has to do with Crüxshadows that we didn’t had the time do do this personal moment. We are so much involved in the music, the live shows and the recordings. And we don’t want stress on or around our wedding day, it should be romantic! So we have the plan to get married now in 2007! BA: I thank you so much and have a great show tonight! Rogue: It’s always a pleasure to talk to you Max!
