Intra Mural Netball Match Report:- Maths vs SUNC In perhaps what was to be the most hotly contested match of the season so far, rivals SUNC and Maths fought head-to-head for victory in today’s Intra Mural match. The game began with a Maths centre and the ball was taken swiftly into their attacking D, only for a potential first advantage to be lost by the starting side. The pressure was tangible as both sides made great turnovers but were unable to convert their efforts to goals. After an exchange of attempts it was SUNC who were able to secure the first goal of the match and start to gain some momentum. The first quarter ended with SUNC looking like the slightly more polished unit and leading the match 3 goals to nil. The second quarter of the match opened with a speedy goal from Maths GA James Austin and SUNC were reminded that they would need to put up a strong fight if they wanted victory. It was clear that both sides could feel the competition with some panicked play coming from both teams. Excellent contest between C’s Katie Denyer and Casey Bell throughout the court made for great watching and encouraged both sides to play hard. SUNC soon began to find their stride however, and Maths seemed unable to mirror the improvement of their rivals, who finished the quarter in the lead with 8 goals to Maths’ 1. The penultimate quarter of the game saw some changes within the squads, showing the versatility of many of the teams’ players. Tessa Sawyer and Danielle Nelson swapped positions to GS and GK respectively for the second half of the match, which proved to be an excellent decision. The combined efforts of attack and defense on the Maths team saw the side score four goals in quick succession without allowing SUNC any opportunity of pulling the quarter back. The third quarter was won by Maths, but the side still trailed behind at 11-6 to SUNC. It was all to play for in the final quarter of this nail biting match. A few changes were made by SUNC in a last effort to secure a win over their rivals this season. Three attempts at goal from the Maths side revealed that they were feeling the pressure. It soon became clear that they were not the only side to feel the competitiveness however, with SUNC making mistakes in their attacking end and missing opportunities to sink goals. A brilliant shot from SUNC Captain Georgina Champion however, was the silent inspiration that made her squad pull together and leave mistakes aside for the second half of the final quarter. The solid squad that they are, Maths are not a side to allow a walkover and the quarter ended as a closely contested one, but it was SUNC who walked away with victory and the score finished as SUNC 14 – 8 Maths. Congratulations to the players of the match who were given to Maths GD Gaby Thompson and SUNC GD Sarah Edwards. Written by Lee Witkowski
