Introduction These are my memories, my story about all of the people who were a part of my life growing up on the inner-city streets of Chicago in the 1980s. Many of the names have been changed to ensure the privacy of those still with us. I was a shy, overweight, naive boy who somehow found his way by observing and taking in everything around me. I have learned many lessons, had my ups and downs, and felt the smack of the asphalt on my face. At times, I felt lost directionless, not knowing where I belonged. I was dying to live life; not living to die . But there were also times when I thought I wanted to let go and give up. I learned that we all have breakdowns in life, but how long they last is up to each one of us. When you reach that breakthrough, you feel alive again having that second chance to feel free and appreciate each day. The experiences I had during my late teens and twenties in the crazy era of the 1980s and 90s was one of the best times of my life. This was a time of rebellion, and through it, we learned about who we really are. We got to be who we wanted to be by expressing ourselves through music and dance, taking it all in, and loving it all. This is an uplifting story of an emotional journey marked by many unforgettable characters, the choices we made, and the consequences of those choices. beautiful girls and boys with raw talent, who were still in middle or high school and stuck cleaning their rooms, cooking dinner, and being told to not talk back. I met these mischievous and stubborn young kids in school, through word of mouth, and at the neighborhood dance club called Stitches. These were kids who routinely got into trouble both on the streets and at home. However, we were all dedicated to the same thing—dance—and the group came together. They leapt out of bedroom windows, off of back porches, and broke curfew just to be a part of it all. As a group, we stuck together when it came to performing and stayed away from the negative forces of domestic violence, gang violence, peer pressure, and bullying. I took them away from all that when they danced for me and we ended up protecting each other. Today, these young boys and girls are now beautiful, radiant women and mothers and strong, loving men and fathers. They have become pillars of society; some are working in the arts and still going strong. This book is my way of sharing the wonderful vision we had so long ago and showing my appreciation, support, and respect for our story. I honor and thank all those who made me a better man and a better person through their own perseverance and strength. I took pieces of everyone and, they also became a part of me. Some of us continue to drift together throughout this ocean of life, and some have drifted away as time faded. I am a product of all who loved me and guided me through life. Love came to me in many different shapes, colors, and faces. Life showed me that you never know what will happen. The person you least expect could be the one to give you a hand and leave your heart open. I made choices: some good, some bad, but they were mine to make. I saw, I felt, I laughed, I cried, I lived, and I don’t regret a thing. Life is like our hot, down-home spices used in making a great sofrito, the seasoned tomato-based sauce used as a foundation in Latin American , blended with love across generations. Gringos Sofrito . of life is always looking for you, and you always there.
