Investigation 4 Economics and the environment Just recently, the World Bank has proposed a declaration that calls for all nations to authorize laws which would force industries to pay for the carbon they are polluting our ozone with. Scientists have claimed that these carbon emissions are the leading cause of global warming. In the past week, President Obama made a speech encouraging the world to be aware and fully engaged in trying to fight global warming. So far, there have been seventy-four countries including China that has signed the declaration. Among these countries, one thousand businesses have signed the declaration as well. Some major businesses include: Shell, Coca-Cola, and Dow Chemical. This declaration also states that governments on these nations have the option of directly taxing carbon pollution or create a cap and trade system. According to Google, cap and trade is meant to reduce emissions and pollution to provide companies with profit incentive to reduce their pollution levels. I believe that this declaration may take a few more years to catch more nations’ attentions. The United States has not signed the declaration and the President and other top administration officials have ceased further efforts to call on a national price on carbon. They are doing so to avoid more criticism from conservatives. The efforts are great but if a few nations are participating, then the effect won’t be as great.
