Investigation of Officer-Involved Shooting Underway TOPEKA, Kan. – An investigation is underway following an officer-involved shooting near SW 6th & Buchanan. The now-deceased suspect was involved in several crime scenes throughout Topeka this morning. Details are as follows. Around 9:00 this morning (12/13), Topeka Police officers were dispatched to domestic disturbance in the 400 block of SW Tyler, where a suspect had reportedly strangled a female victim. A family member who attempted to intervene observed the suspect taking a knife and gun out of the residence. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival. At 11:15 a.m., Topeka Police Officers were dispatched on an attempted carjacking in the 1000 block of SW 5th. There, officers located a female victim that had been cut on her face with a knife. The suspect fled the area on foot prior to police arrival. At 11:30 a.m., Topeka Police officers located the suspect on foot in area of SW 6th and Buchanan. Officers found the man armed with a handgun. The suspect was actively pointing the handgun at bystanders and at police on the scene. Officers repeatedly asked the suspect to drop the weapon. The suspect refused these orders, and was then shot by officers on the scene. The suspect was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the 19-year-old suspect will be released after family notification. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is handling this investigation, as is routinely the case in investigations involving TPD officers. The four Topeka Police officers involved in this shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues. The four officers have a combined 58 years of service on the Topeka Police force. Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor was also at the scene following the shooting.
