Invitation Armenians settled in Transylvania in the 17th century - TopicsExpress

Invitation Armenians settled in Transylvania in the 17th century coming from Moldova. The prince of Transylvania settled them in economically disadvantaged regions, but not much later they started building the only town in Transylvania planned entirely by a single architect- Szamosujvar-Gherla, known by its old name as Armenopolis. At the beginning of their settlement they became Catholics and citizens of the nation which accepted them. They were in small numbers, but shortly they became promoters of Transylvanian cultural and economical life. Their unique identity was ensured by their specific religious and Transylvanian Armenian aspect. Today in almost all Transylvanian towns there are people of Armenian descent. Sadly they don’t speak the language, but they feel Armenian and in organizations, liturgy and traditions they try to preserve their culture. For this 300 years old presence and specific identity, the Association of Hungarian Armenians of Transylvania was created. Its goal is to preserve this identity and the spiritual and cultural heritage which can be found even today in some towns ( Gherla, Gheorgheni, Frumoasa, Dumbraveni, Tg. Secuiesc, Turda, Tg. Mures, Cluj-Napoca). The Association was established after a long cooperation between different Armenian communities. This birthday will be celebrated on 16th June 2013 in Gheorgheni where the largest community of Armenians exists in Romania and where we would like to ask if you could honour us with your presence at this event.
