Ironically--here is my post today on the following of Jesus --a Facebook blog: December 20, 2014 The Following of Jesus The truth is what you and I do. Matthew 7, 28 Then, when Jesus concluded these remarks, the crowds were impressed with his instruction because he was being a teacher who taught with who he was—and not like some scholar teaching what others had written. Truth comes by unpeeling, by discovering I am wrong, and Jesus—or “somebody” else is right. To find the truth—to start the process, anyway—takes the humility to listen to this Teacher—who IS the truth. Some switch needs to turn on, some act of welcoming discomfort, some choice to trust that another person is at least your equal, if not better. When somebody calls you a name—the Teacher says—listen and learn. When someone humiliates you—the Teacher says—don’t be excusing yourself, or be considering a comeback. If you are grieving—it is authentic—you are real, and you are part of the Family of God. If you pray your real feelings in secret, or ask for forgiveness, or deflect judging others, then you are a follower—a flowering—of the teachings of Jesus. Jesus reaches for and tries to teach the invisible dimension—the Kingdom of Heaven. Creation offers it every moment to you and me. If it does not exist for you—call it “faith” in the unseen—then peel away the falsehoods you find in your conscience, in society, in your community and your friendships. The Kingdom of Heaven is within you and me. It is in our very connections, our mutual enrichment, our mutual healing. That is THE teaching of Jesus. That choice to change is what “impresses” us with the teaching—the truth—he offers. Take it. Humble, poor, ordinary as you find yourself, you become exceptional and unique. Know yourself—but more than that, Do the Truth—Do the Caring which is your legacy as a creature of love. That is it.
