Irony. Fate Destiny. As a youngster my family was friends with a gentleman and his wife, his name was Cecil Scott and my middle name is taken from him. They were caretakers for a large property on Raccoon Lake with numerous homes, cabins and even a jail. The family had long since retired to the south and rarely visited any longer. It was owned by the Sargent Paint Company. Fast forward to 1968 as I cut grass at this location (pictures) with my brother in law who had the contract to cut it. No fence, no markers just a plain corner lot. As I cut the grass my foot fell into a hole from a Civil War grave with a wooden coffin. I lost my shoe. This is the grave of John Sargent and I now live on Sargent Road just a stones throw down the road where his house still stands today. And each time I sit at what seems to be an excessively long red, I ponder “so what’s the deal with the random tombstone?” From the road, the tiny cemetery provides the curious with precious few answers. Unless you were to be walking by, there is no quick place to stash one’s automobile while you investigate further. And for some reason, at least for me, that particular intersection is one of many in the city that fills me more with a feeling of “please let traffic move through here at a reasonable rate,” rather than a “I’ll park my car a few blocks from here and wander over to have a look.” However, partially encouraged by Steve Campbell’s “What’s in a Name – Sargent Road” article, this week I finally had my look.
