Irving Gill buildings dominate La Jolla’s historic Prospect and Draper St district thanks to the patronage of Ellen Browning Scripps. The La Jolla Recreation Center, was donated by Ms. Scripps to the City of San Diego for the children of La Jolla and completed in 1915. These photos show the building exterior, the billiard room, the auditorium on dedication day (July 3, 1915) the club room, the original men’s showers (there was also a bathtub!), and the front portico. Look closely at Gill’s architectural drawing to see how the building’s interior has been altered.
