Is Nigeria a religious or a secular state? We have the religious - TopicsExpress

Is Nigeria a religious or a secular state? We have the religious jurisprudence of Sharia, and Christians are now asking to float Ecclesiastical Courts, the President is demanding northern states sponsor Christians to Jerusalem pilgrimages just as they sponsor Muslims to Mecca. There are the squabbles about prayers and hijabs and what religion should pray first or last. These are extremely fissionable troubles that can make total nonsense of our country even as they they bring out the worst in religion. How has it come to this? Two things will surely come out of this, from historical perspective. 1. Religion will be discredited. Any casual look at the history of Europe will give you a picture of a realm dominated by religious leaders across centuries. These became even more powerful than the state and appointed governments and had anyone who disagreed with them roasted alive at stake. The result was a groundswell against the Church and consequently, a more or less atheistic continent till date. This problem will give awesome power religious leaders at great costs to both religion and state and threaten freedoms across the board. 2. No nation ever survived hate. The fire of religious bitterness we are stoking will foment hate which will find practical expressions at a point if this trend continues. The precursor for such expressions can be supplied by tensions from the upcoming elections. I pray this does not happen. It just must not happen. We all have the duty to stop all these religion traffickers in their tracks before they burn down Nigeria. And when you really look at it, most of these promoters of Christian and Muslim interests in the political space are core pagans and utterly godless men and women who are merely looking for advantage. They are the one running the mega billion, government deals frauds, they are never far from deadly rituals and all manners of satanism that rock the social order. They merely enlist religious schisms in their gamut of activities for the purpose of holding the attention and souls of followers and for the purpose of making money.
