Is Penang DAP trying to be more Penang than Penangites? ======================== KUALA LUMPUR - Penang Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow has slammed the DAP-led Penang state government over its decision yesterday to ban foreigners from working as chief cooks at hawker food outlets. Describing it as a political stunt, Teng said the state government’s latest move was an attempt to distract the people in Penang from the real situation. “I don’t think it will in anyway help to retain the original Penang taste. “It is just a political stunt of the state government in trying to portray that they are more Penangites than Penangites themselves,” he told The Rakyat Post when contacted recently. He also claimed that when the state government failed to improve the overall living conditions in the state, this new move is intended to camouflage the situation. “One needs to camouflage failure with emotional appeal. This is happening now in Penang under the Pakatan administration,” he added. Yesterday, the Penang government announced that it will ban foreigners from working as chief cooks at hawker food outlets starting Jan 1, 2016. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state executive council made the decision after 86% of respondents in a survey supported the proposal. He said the requirement for street hawkers to employ only local chief cooks would be made one of the criteria in their licence application. “Hawkers will be given a one-year transition period starting from Jan 1 next year to enable them to adjust to the new ruling, and it will be done in stages, not immediately,” he was quoted as saying. Lim said the decision applied to all street hawkers, coffee shops, hawker complexes and shopping mall food courts. “Foreigners can assist the cook or be kitchen helpers at the shops but the main cooks must be locals,” he said, adding that restaurants would be exempted from the policy.
