Is Texas ready to elect someone to statewide office that believes we should be a stand - alone nation? "Texas Democrats have almost no chance in 2014. Unless Texas Republicans nominate somebody like Barry Smitherman. Smitherman, the state’s top energy official and a candidate for attorney general, told a conspiracy website this week that Texas is ready to be an “independent nation,” a “stand-alone entity.” This is not some whoop-it-up yokel with a T-shirt booth at First Monday in Weatherford. This is the elected chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission. He is one of three Republican front-runners to succeed Greg Abbott as attorney general of the state of Texas. Or maybe the Republic of Texas. In a commentary headlined “ Texas Official Preparing for Independence,” the conspiracy hobbyists’ site WorldNetDaily quotes Smitherman about protecting Texas from events “outside our borders.” If that wasn’t clear, the next quote is. Talking about Texas’ resources, Smitherman said the state has “made great progress in becoming an independent nation, an ‘island nation’ if you will.” And: “I think we want to continue down that path so that if the rest of the country falls apart, Texas can operate as a stand-alone entity with energy, food, water and roads as if we were a closed-loop system.” Look, I don’t know Barry or his wife, Marijane. I’ve never read his book, If Jesus Were an Investment Banker. But if Marijane got up this morning and told him she’s becoming independent in case he falls apart — well, I’m just guessing that might not go well. Smitherman’s political consultant, Allen Blakemore of Houston, said I took it all wrong. “It’s all about energy independence,” Blakemore said Tuesday. “This is all about Barry’s long-held philosophy that Texas should not depend on anyone else.” That line about the “island nation” is about energy? And the stand-alone entity? The closed loop? Blakemore sighed. “Look, I’m just not getting what you’re reading,” he said. “What I’m telling you is, this is about energy.” So I emailed John Griffing, who wrote the WorldNetDaily commentary, and asked what Smitherman meant. Griffing wrote back. He said Smitherman was definitely talking about the U.S. losing “its current form” and Texas becoming independent. This is after an Aug. 15 speech in Austin where Smitherman said that most babies aborted in Texas would have voted Republican and that China’s one-child families have “social problems.” He also encouraged men to marry young “and then have lots of kids.” Do it for the Republic."
