Is Your Home Ready for Freezing Temps? At Greenstone, we want to ensure you enjoy your home during the fall and winter. We encourage our community members and homeowners to take preventative action to mitigate freezing pipes. Water freezes when heat in the water is transferred to subfreezing air. The best way to keep water in pipes from freezing is to slow or stop this transfer of heat. Add a level of protection to your home by adhering to the tips below. Here are 7 tips to protect your home during colder weather: 1. Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water pipes or supply lines in the garage. 2. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children and pets. 3. Let cold water drip from the faucet when the weather is very cold outside. Running even a trickle of water through the pipe helps to prevent pipes from freezing. 4. Check outside your house for any exposed pipes and protect them with some type of temporary insulation (a towel, blanket or small rug), or consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a pipe sleeve, UL-listed heat tape, heat cable or similar materials on exposed water pipes. 5. Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst. 6. Leave the heat on in your home if you will be going away during cold weather, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F. 7. Be sure to close the vents in your foundation if your home has a crawl space. Enjoy the change in season! ~ The Greenstone Team
