Is Your Pet A Southpaw? At just 10% of the world population, we have to adapt to a right-handed world. But while humans are overwhelmingly right-handed, the animal kingdom is actually quite more diverse. The dexterity with which a dog or cat can use its paws closely approximates our own ability to manipulate our hands and fingers, and this ability fascinates many owners who spend hours watching the antics of their pet as it explores new things with almost human like control. Here are some tips to determine if your pet is right or left pawed. But this does take time – you need to repeat these tests 100 times over several days….. Are you up for it?? Tests for Dogs * If your dog can “shake,” which paw does she usually offer? * Put a dab of a sticky food on your pooch’s nose. Which paw does he use to take it off? * Put a tiny treat just out of reach of your dog. Which paw does she use to grab it? * Put a tiny treat under your dog’s food bowl. Which paw does he use to move the bowl? * When your dog wants to go outside, which paw does she use to knock on the door? * Fill a toy with your dog’s favorite treat. Does he use his right or left paw to touch the toy the first time? Does he use his left or right paw to hold the toy? Tests for Cats * Put a dab of a sticky food on your cat’s nose. Does he use his right or left paw to take it off? * Put a tiny treat just out of reach of your cat. Does she use her right or left paw to grab it? * Put a tiny treat under your cat’s food bowl. Does he use his right or left paw to move the bowl? * Dangle your cat’s favorite toy over his/her head. Does she use her right or left paw to bat at the toy? Luckily, left pawed pets don’t have to adjust to a right-handed world. Which paw they choose simply doesn’t matter that much to them. They eat, sleep, and play without a problem no matter which paw they prefer. In fact, I think most pets always manage to put their best paw forward! Have you ever noticed a paw preference in your dog or cat? We’d love to know.
