Is a shiny health halo impacting on your health? The health halo - TopicsExpress

Is a shiny health halo impacting on your health? The health halo effect leads us to overestimate how healthy a food is. - Eating nut butter straight from the jar or putting it on everything because it is healthy (and really delicious). - Eating a whole tub of frozen yoghurt because its better than full fat ice-cream, right? THE HEALTH HALO If you think something is healthy and guilt free, you will be more likely to eat larger amounts, unlike full-fat options. Whilst these healthier options may contain some added benefit (e.g. organic, low fat) or provide a few less kilojoules we are more likely to overeat these foods therefore negating the benefits of making a healthier choice. THE PROBLEM Health halos are proven to cause people to eat more food than they intended. Studies have shown that people overeat low-fat foods more than full fat versions because they beleive they are healthy. People with diabetes also eat too many sugar-free foods because they think they are either low in carbohydrates or carbohydrate free. If you overeat this healthy foods, you are still overeating. And thats not healthy. CHECK YO SELF So, are you wearing a health halo? Which foods do you eat too much of because you think they are healthy? - Low fat ... - Gluten-free .... - Sugar-free lollies? - Nut butter? - Organic foods IN CASE YOURE INTERESTED I would rather have a small portion of the real deal, indulgent treat and really enjoy it than make a healthy version of the food I really love. E.g. One scoop of messina is better than a bowl of froghurt.
