Is a voter ID card essential for voting? No. This is a very commonly held myth! Only 2 things are mandatory for voting- 1. Your name should be there in the list of registered voters i.e. in electoral roll or voter list.of your polling booth. 2. You should carry an approved identity proof document. If you are issued with a voter ID card, you have to compulsorily carry it on the day of voting as an identity proof. If you do not possess a voter ID card, you can carry any one of the approved identity proof documents on election day. a) Passport, b) Driving Licence, c) Income Tax Identity ( PAN ) Card, d) Service Identity Cards having photograph, issued to its employees by e) State/Central Govt, PSU, Local Bodies or Public Limited Companies, f) Passbook with Photograph issued by Public Sector Banks/Post Office and g) Kisan Passbook h) SC/ST/OBC certificate issued by competent authority with photograph i) Pension Documents such as ex-servicemen’s Pension Book/Pension j) Payment Order, ex-servicemen’s Widow/Dependent Certificates, Old Age k) Pension Order, Widow Pension Order with photograph l) Freedom Fighter Identity Card with photograph. m) Arms Licenses with photograph n) Certificate of Physical Handicap with photograph issued by the Authority o) Health Insurance Scheme Card with photograph (Ministry of Labour’s Scheme) p) Property Document with Photograph such as pattas, Registered Deeds, etc. q) Job Cards with photo under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme r) Authenticated ‘Photo Voter Slip’ issued by Election Machinery.
