Is it Live or is it Memorex? Ok, we have received this same question for each of our past musicals, from ...La Mancha to Hairspray, whether it was the orchestra or the singers or both that received prerecorded enhancements, i.e., instrumental or vocal click tracks, recordings, sweeteners, etc. of any sort. We have even addressed this question in curtain speeches during our past runs, asking the conductor to wave his baton from the pit, or some of the orchestra to play a bit of music, or explaining that everything the audience hears from the stage is live, singers as well. We explain that we have a standing single mic and video monitor showing the conductor backstage for anyone not in a musical number that knows the songs to stand and sing along if available when they can. Sometimes there are 2 or 3 doing so, sometimes a bit more depending upon the musical number, but all live, only, always. Well, mates, we just got that question again! I just answered a regular (and very discriminating) patron who attended with his mother, both of whom felt that the sound of the chorus was just too good to be true. He even mentioned observing the movement of the performers mouths to see if perhaps it he could detect a lip synch gap. I was delighted to enlighten him, and as each time before, shared that I consider it high compliment indeed, which he graciously reaffirmed. I know there are some shows, amateur (understandable for some given various limitations) as well as professional (inexcusable for any, considering the ticket prices), that use recorded music or vocals or both, sometimes or all of the time. LTGI isnt one of them, not yet, not now, not ever. Thanks for allowing me to share your query, patron J.Q. Public! ;)
