Is it by default or design that Mayor Finizio continues to drive wedges between members of this community opening up old wounds, setting those with few economic resources against those with more, causing even more friction between members of the diverse groups of our city? Many, if not most, of us who live in this community are well aware of the problems we face and have made progress towards resolving the problems that affect us all; maybe not enough and maybe not fast enough but progress nevertheless. We will get where we need to be but Finizios habitual pattern of deprecation and disregard of this communities achievements in furthering his personal and political agenda is nonsensical and detrimental to the people who live here. Testifying Tuesday were Sarah Steffian, a principal member and supporter of the conservancy, who said she has spent $1 million to $2 million on lawyers and expert witnesses in the Fort Trumbull cases...Kathleen Mitchell, a local activist and member of the conservancy, broke down briefly as she described watching crews demolish the homes while their former occupants paced back and forth. It took no time at all, she said of the Picinich home at 237 Howard St. As I remember it, that machine just smashed into the home and pulled it apart and it fell into pieces. What was a home became a pile of junk, she said, and the claw scooped it into a truck.
