I made a promise to no longer post about sports but I have to put my 2 cents in about current state of The Buffalo Bills. This post may not sit well with some of my Buffalo friends but I have to state my opinion on the ongoing limbo status of The Bills. The New England Patriots changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971, Foxborough is a suburb 25miles away from downtown Boston. In doing so created a fan base and revenue demographic that stretched from the top of Maine to Providence RI to New Hampshire and beyond. Changing the name in 1971 was one of the best decisions the Franchise made when joining the NFL with the merger of the AFL. Living in Rochester its seems like my city has always had an identity crisis when it came to supporting professional teams. For most claiming the Bills as their team seemed to be the best decision due the proximity between the 2 cities. The residents of Monroe County support a large amount of The Bills annual income and even though Im not sure exactly how much I would have to guess a minimum of 35%. The Bills are actually practicing right now in Rochester the home of their training camp. Maybe its time for the team to take a more regional status rather than an individual city status. (This is the part I know my Buffalo friends are going to hate) Empire State Bills Upstate Bills The New York Bills Or some other regional name to grow the fan base and give a little well deserved identity to the fans that dont live in Buffalo and the other cities that support the franchise. It would be a complete disgrace to see the team team move to Canada, London or anywhere else the heavy hitters are plotting their motives on moving the franchise. Keep the team in Proximity of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse etc. Broaden the fan base and maintain a successful business model that does not require an owner to pour money into it Year after Year. Theres no question I bleed blue and will always bleed blue, But if I had a professional team that represents my region of NY, not just an individual city thats 90 miles away. Id have a AFC team to root for and Id buy season tickets and support it fully. Batavia just an ear shot away from both cities. It might be easier to swallow having a new name for the region of the team than not have a team at all in the region.
