Is the Portage Resale Shop the same as Goodwill? We get this - TopicsExpress

Is the Portage Resale Shop the same as Goodwill? We get this question a lot, and the answer is no, we are not really the same at all. We are an independent 501c3 Charity. While we do sell donated items, the similarities stop there. Goodwill’s mission is to help people by training them to get jobs, a very noble cause. Goodwill has a national presence and raises money to help the whole organization nationwide. The proceeds from your purchases may or may not stay in the community. The Portage Resale Shop does things a little differently. We are locally operated only. Our mission is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and take in the stranger. We do this by collecting donations, cleaning, sorting and then merchandising them. Some items are sold to help with overhead, and some are given directly to individuals in need, with referral. All of your donations stay local to help local issues. Your extra clothing may end up being given to a family who lost everything in a fire, your old pots and pans may be given to a family transitioning out of a homeless shelter, your last season’s coat will be given to someone unable to purchase one on their own. We are a clearinghouse of resources, taking from people who have extra, and holding on to it until we find someone in need. Your “only worn once” shoes may be sold to help pay the Nipsco bill so we can be here doing what we do next year as well. We are an all volunteer at the Portage Resale Shop, with only one paid employee, our Executive Director. 30 people give 800 hours each month to help those less fortunate, and have a little fun along the way as well. As we gear up for our move, we need more volunteers, not only for moving day, but everyday going forward. A few hours a week of your time can make a difference in several people’s lives, including your own.
