Is this guy, TV chef Pete Evans, a paranoid or actually under an organised attack because he is seen as a threat to the grains food producers? Evans advocates a paleo diet, which recommends cutting sugar, grains and legumes out of your diet as a cure for obesity. I am not going to buy into this argument here but the Australian Dietitians Association certainly is deeply, deeply partisan in the shitfight between proponents of the paleo diet and its opponents, the most vehement among them being Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council. Am I wrong in thinking that if Evans influences enough people to cut/minimise grains-based foods out of their diet it would affect the grains producers and manufacturers’ bottom line? Still, the Dietitians Association of Australia, quoted extensively in the two Herald articles and one in The Australian (see the links below) attacking Evans’ credibility is a totally neutral arbiter of nutrition out here to advise, as its name implies, right? You would think. But there’s a problem. Dietitians Association of Australia is a corporate partner of the Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council. Call me old fashioned but I assume that a “corporate partner” means that there is a commercial arrangement involving money between the two, sort like the Heart Foundation approving with its red tick products such as Milo chocolate cereal and McCains Ham & Pineapple pizza for money. Oh no! Is it possible that Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council is not a “nutrition” body but simply a PR front for grains marketers and multinational food companies who don’t care so much about your wellbeing as about how to maximise their profits? Curiosity got the better of me and I went to their web page. Gold! I was immediately attracted to the bottom of their page which boasts of its attack on Evans. What a coincidence. daa.asn.au/for-the-media/responses-to-misinformation/ Conveniently, the Dietitians Association of Australia’s corporate partner Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council provides a quick bio of its board members: Dr Michelle Allan, chair – previously Michele was the CEO of a publicly listed food company and has held executive positions at Amcor Ltd (packager of processed foods), Kraft Foods, Bonlac Foods, ICI and Nestle; Steve Marshall, Director, held senior positions at Goodman Fielder (major bread manufacturer) from 1993 until 2000 and he is currently a Director of the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre and previously served as a Director and Deputy Chair for the Rural Industries R&D Corporation from 2002 until 2008, was a Director of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation from 2005 to 2007 and was the Deputy Chair of Grains Research and Development Corporation until 2011; Peter Schutz, Director – is Chair of Food Innovation Australia Limited and Non-Executive Director of Lupin Foods Australia, and has worked in the food industry in executive management roles for companies including George Weston Foods, Meadow Lea, Serrol, Quality Bakers, Good Food Products, NSW Egg Corporation and Tooth, Resch and Courage Breweries; Robyn Murray was Managing Director of Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council from mid-2010 until late 2012. She is currently the Director of Food Technology and Quality at Weston Milling, a division of George Weston Foods. Robyn has strong corporate R&D experience having worked for several major food companies including Sara Lee, Campbell Arnott’s and Kellogg’s. Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council bills itself as “Australias knowledge centre for science-based evidence on the health benefits of including grain-based foods”. Yeah, yeah, but above all it’s a shill and a stooge for food companies whose business is grains products. smh.au/lifestyle/diet-and-fitness/paleo-advocate-pete-evans-accused-of-deleting-critical-posts-on-facebook-20141218-129ks3.html smh.au/national/health/paleo-diet-does-it-work-and-what-does-the-craze-say-about-us-20141213-123f2h.html daa.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/GLNC-response-to-Pete-Evans-Position-Statement-210714.pdf
