/Island Review #11/ Salt Island! Named for its three evaporating ponds and was once an important source of salt. It is still sold to the visitors. Like many of the neighboring islands, it is volcanic in origin. The island is also known for the wreck of the Royal Mail Steamer – RMS Rhone which sank in a hurricane on October 29, 1867. It is now one of the best scuba diving sites in the Caribbean. Some of the underwater scenes were used in a film “The Deep”. Population? – hasnt been more than three people since 1980. Annual rent – one pound bag of salt paid to Queen of the United Kingdom and delivered to the Governor. There are no services or restaurants here, but it makes a great stop for few hrs to explore on our trips!
