Isle of Wright Bat Hospital; a non profit voluntary organization providing a 24/7 service, collecting and rehabilitating sick or injured bats. Graham and Donna Street set up the Bat Hospital, in 1997. They converted one of their bedrooms and part of their dining room into purpose built aviaries to house both long and short-term patients. The hospital has now rescued over 1600 bats since it started in 1997. Any bats that have sustained debilitating injuries or are elderly and are unable to fend for themselves in the wild are allowed to live out their lives in the comfort of the hospital. The hospital is now home to 50 resident bats, including rare Grey Long eared and a Bechstein’s bats. Graham and Donna are able to deal with the majority of the injuries that bats sustain, but more serious problems are dealt with by their vet Dr Ian Green of Green & Forster. The Bat Hospital now rescues around 100 bats every year of which 70% are successfully released back to the wild.
