Isnt it one of lifes most delicious surprises to find that a book picked up as a time filler, is actually a beautifully crafted, engaging work? Such was the case when I chose Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. The novel, though easy to read, deals with a difficult and rarely mentioned time in our nations past. For a time, in the early part of the twentieth century, orphaned children in the northeast were sent on orphan trains to the Midwest, where they were handed out to whomever might take them. There were of course many happy families created this way, but there were also many stories of abuse and enforced labor. Children were kept like animals, and expected to be grateful that they were alive.
