Israel is very quickly approaching the anniversary date for the expulsion of Israeli residents from Gush Katif. In August 2005, the Israeli army moved the 8,600 residents of Gush Katif to Israel. They were evicted from the area and their homes demolished as part of Israels unilateral disengagement plan from the Gaza Strip portion of the Palestinian Territories. They were residents who had very successful businesses, communities, and Synagogues. In the year 2005, in the Hebrew month of Av, Israels government tore apart the lives of nearly 10,000 of its own people in pursuit of peace – but peace did not come. Arab Palestinians chose not to take advantage of what the Israeli Government had left them. Instead of taking advantage they chose to come in and Mow down Years of Hard work by Israelis. Like today Not one thing they do makes any normal sense. While the People of Israel mourned the destruction that occurred during the Disengagement from Gaza the Palestinian Arabs celebrated a victory. Jews who had lived there for generations, raising their families, building thriving businesses and to a great extent also serving as the frontier protecting the southern region from terror their lives were thrown into chaos. Since the Disengagement, Palestinian Authority Arab terrorists have increased the range and intensity of the mortar and missile fire aimed at southern Israel from Gaza. Today their deadly attacks reach dozens of kilometers further north than ever before because of the expulsion with many launched from terrorist camps built upon the ruins of once-flourishing Jewish towns. The law that led to the Disengagement, passed during the administration of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and we all know how that turned out. The Law mandated the destruction of 23 Jewish communities in the Gush Katif and northern Samaria (Shomron) regions, and the complete withdrawal of all Israel Defense Forces from Gaza. One thing to know and remember (ALWAYS) as much as we love and support Israel the Israeli Government does not always do the right things. Way often they choose to listen to outside influences. Years later, only 35 percent of the families are living in permanent homes. The rest are still living in the relatively tiny caravillas they were forced to inhabit upon their expulsion, many of which are badly in need of repair. Some live in rented apartments. Some moved elsewhere. As we Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem and all of Israel we need to Pray that Her Leaders will Make Right choices for all Jews. There are farm owners, of the original 400 business owners, still waiting for the government to allocate them land in exchange for that which they were forced to abandon. The unemployment rate among former Gush Katif residents is an extremely high percent, as opposed to the 4 percent rate seen when they were living in their home communities. Countless social and mental health problems also arose as a result of the Disengagement from Gaza, including suicides, PTSD, depression, anxiety, divorces, academic failures and more. Also Pray for all of the former residents of Gush Katif.
