Israel’s motive in attacking Syria Tue Jun 24, 2014 Israel has launched several airstrikes against Syrian military positions in the Golan Heights, killing at least 10 Syrian soldiers. The Tel Aviv regime said it was retaliating against an attack that left an Israeli teenager dead. An Israeli website said, however, that Israel took the opportunity for action to break the standoff between the militants and Syrian troops in the two-month battle for Quneitra. The Syrian army has been defending the town against the militants, who are reinforced by units trained and armed in Jordan by American instructors. In 2012, the Brookings Institution said in a report that “Israel could posture forces on or near the Golan Heights and, in so doing, might divert government forces from engaging the militants. Israel seized 1,200 square kilometers (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community. KQ/HJL
