Istanbul, a city of over 14 million people, has very few green spaces left, of which Gezi Park is one. One of several issues that is of concern to the protestors is a plan to turn the park into (you guessed it) a shopping mall. Other issues include the current political regime and silencing of the media (a bit of irony since the mainstream American media has been fairly silent about the struggle in Turkey).
