It always amazes me the disconnect I find in the medical profession, churches and people in general. Nurses from the very beginning of their studies are taught that promoting independence (self care) is one of the important keys to health. When someone is dependent on a caregiver and the caregiver dies that patient is in a world of trouble. That is why we try to make each patient as independent as possible. Why is it that doesnt cross over into the political realm? It seems as if the majority of nurses tend to fight for every program that makes people.dependent upon government instead of teaching people how to do things for themselves. Why is that? It isnt just nurses either. Why is it that many churches would rather send someone from a social agency to visit the sick, widowed and fatherless? We as a nation need to do these things for ourselves and not be dependent on government. If our government fails and we are dependent on it what happens to us as a nation? There will be no more access cards, no more social security, no more agencies to bail us out. Why would we ever want to put ourselves in that kind of position? People need to know what to do if they no longer have a grocery store, water coming out of their faucet, no heat, no electricity,no working bathroom, no communication, no medicine and no transportation. People need to have a plan instead of an extended hand waiting for a handout.
