It has been 7 years and 5 days since I got a new-to-me cornea. Yesterday I saw the surgeon/opthamologist who did the initial surgery to save my eye from a vicious, antibiotic resistent infection and also did the transplant surgery several months later. That was the surgery that gave me my vision back. I still need some seriously powerful contact lenses, but before the surgery my vision wasnt even correctable. Everything looks good for my eye health, as of yesterday. Today I am grateful for western medicine, for surgeons, for health insurance, for people who are organ/tissue donors, for Adam (who went to every appointment with me, led me around/drove me around, held my hand when I was scared, was generally a rock and who even gave me a really cool camera at a time when I only had vision in one eye: best husband ever!), and for all of our friends/family members who helped us keep the laughter flowing during that challenging time. Im grateful for the gift of sight. Im grateful to the person who died too young and who selflessly donated their cornea (they told me that my new-to-me cornea came from someone about my age which was almost 36 at the time) and my thoughts are with those who mourned a terrible loss even while I celebrated a successful transplant surgery. My thoughts wander to those who dont have access to the miraculous procedures that I was lucky enough to benefit from, to those who are less fortunate than I have been... in countless ways. Today is my birthday and my birthday wish is that all humans everywhere experience joy and love and laughter and have access to all of the things that they need in order to thrive. I want us to value and protect our air and water and soil. I want us to reach out and pull each other up. I want us to recognize and celebrate our differences AND recognize and celebrate what we all have in common. May all beings be happy and well.
