It has been my observation that the characters in foreign films smile and laugh much less than the characters in American cinema. Of course there are the exceptions, such as Roberto benigni and mr. bean, but they are few and far between. In general, These foreign actors are much more selective with their emotions, and display them with reservation. perhaps they find foolishness in melodrama, maybe they do not care to demonstrate feelings that are not fully warranted and sentiments that have not been earned. Or, it is possible, they endeavor to portray the subtle and muted range of emotions that exist amidst the extremes. The ones that faintly emerge from time to time, but bear no name. As a result of this subdued demonstration, characters tend to retain a certain stability to them, a simplicity, as well as a steadfastness. not being easily swept up by the theatrics of the moment, they often fill the gaps in dialogue with blank stares, vacant pauses and respiration. And although it seems as if a film smattered with these repressed responses would cause a lull in the storyline, I can assure you that never really is the case.
