It has been over 12 years since I made my way into a ricket of an elevator going up up up with Grant Guy to see my first Adhere & Deny performance. (I was with Ian Mozdzen that night.) The show was called Requiem (2002), an object/puppet theatre work based on the poetry of the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, performed by the lovely Sharon Bajer. I had never seen anything like it. From the tiny studio theatre where incandescent light bulbs hung from the ceiling to the ritualized use of crafted objects that were pushed around with words into a miniature world all of it’s own. It was a meaningful experience for me and one that delightfully pushed the possibilities of performance. … Years later, and after having seen more of the company’s work, I was asked by Grant to perform in his world. First in Paradise Lost (2009), then Still Walking (2010) and The Bedbug (2011). Now, I am directing my take on (found)/object theatre, based on Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim’s 10th century script Sapientia (thank you Joseph Shragge) Combining my visual creation experience with out of line theatre and the possibilities of object theatre (that I would have never encountered in the way that I did if it wasn’t for Grant Guy) I am happy to present some pictures from a most wonderful photo-shoot last night in preparation for Sapientia, to be presented this January at the 2014 Canoe Festival! Thank you Grant, Valerie Planche, Z Brendan Z Nearey, Kara L.C., John Battye (photographer) and Stefano Muneroni
