It has not always been about being sick, hospitals, disability and wheelchairs. In the early years we used to live in Elwood, a bayside suburb of Melbourne. On Saturday mornings the Palais a local picture theatre ran matinees for younger people. Black and white Batman serials I remember, also the Phantom and Zorro. The theatre could seat fifteen hundred people on two levels. It also sloped down slightly from the back. Enough for the adventurous to roll Jaffas down the aisles. Walking home you would go through Acland Street. Cafes, restaurants, take always, Jewish, Chinese, Hungarian, Australian food, and those are just the ones I remember. On one side of the street there were four cake shops almost next to each other. I can still see myself standing at the window, looking, comparing wondering. On Sunday mornings my father went there to meet friends and do some shopping. He would bring home bagels, cake and flowers for my mother. My love of flowers is one of the many good things I inherited from my father. I thank him for that.
